ABOUT OUR COMPANY
Central Welding Works was established in 1943 by the late MR Reuben Horwitz who was well known by his peers as a specialist in his field of welding.
He started Central Welding Works in a garage at 69 Jeppe Street, Sunnyside, Pretoria, manufacturing stove boilers. Soon after he needed to expand and rented additional space at 474 Church street East. The line of business in those days was repairing pots and pans and any small welding job that came to hand. The manufacture of stove boilers evolved to custom made fire grates and other specialized work.
In 1953 the business continued expanding, more staff were hired and Reuben’s son Mervyn started working at Central Welding Works. Mervyn started at the bottom of the ladder and eventually took over as the Managing Director.
Mervyn changed the nature of the business specializing in the manufacture of steel from stairs and balustrading up to large scale industrial structural steel projects. By 1965 the premises were once again too small and Central Welding relocated to larger premises, eventually settling at our current location, 57 Maltzan Street Pretoria West.
In 1989 Mervyns son, Stephen joined the family business and is currently the Managing Director. Mervyn retired at the age of 79 after a long successful career.
We currently have capacity to output 200 tons of structural steel per month with modern lean manufacturing model. Utilizing 3-D modelling software to produce detailed workshop drawings we can streamline manufacturing to keep up with the ever changing and sometimes difficult construction industry.
